Samoa is celebrated for its natural beauty and strong sense of community, yet families continue to face economic and educational challenges. Nearly all children of primary-school age are enrolled in school, with a gross enrollment ratio of about 102% in 2023¹. However, only 13.4% of eligible youth reach tertiary education, showing that while access exists, pathways to higher learning remain limited². Youth unemployment remains around 11.9%³, and approximately 60% of Samoa’s workforce is employed informally, often without stable income or benefits⁴. These conditions highlight the need for quality education and vocational training to prepare students for a changing economy. Although Samoa’s education system has steadily improved, rural areas continue to face disparities in resources, infrastructure, and access to secondary education. Expanding early education and building safe, resilient classrooms are essential steps toward equipping the next generation of Samoans with the skills to thrive⁵.
In Apia, many schools struggle with overcrowding and limited classroom space, making it difficult for teachers to give each child the attention they deserve. Facilities often lack the basic resources and modern tools needed to support young learners, and maintenance challenges have left many buildings unsafe or in poor condition. Only a small portion of Samoa’s schools have safe classrooms, sanitation facilities, or disaster response plans⁶, leaving students vulnerable when storms or floods occur. For families in low-income areas, these conditions make it harder for children to stay engaged and succeed in school. Building safe, well-equipped classrooms is essential to helping Samoa’s youngest students learn in stability and grow with confidence.
This summer, HXP Builders will partner with local educators and community members in Apia to construct new classrooms designed to relieve overcrowding and improve learning conditions for primary kids at a local primary school. These buildings will serve as both places of education and safe shelters during tropical storms and cyclones. Through this project, Builders and locals will work hand in hand to expand access to quality education, strengthen community ties, and build a foundation of faith and hope that will benefit future generations.
