2026 Project Stories: Costa Rica Pura Vida North

October 28, 2025

Costa Rica has made progress in strengthening its education system, but significant challenges remain. While primary education is free and enrollment rates are high, only about 45% of students complete high school, reflecting deep-seated inequalities.¹ Rural schools in particular struggle with overcrowding, limited infrastructure, and shortages of trained teachers and resources, making it difficult to provide quality education. These issues are compounded by economic hardships that prevent many students from staying in school, further perpetuating cycles of poverty and inequality.

Children in Costa Rica—especially those in San José—encounter major challenges in their education.² Many schools face overcrowded classrooms, inadequate facilities, and a lack of trained teachers, all of which limit the quality of learning. Economic pressure often forces students to leave school early to help support their families, decreasing their opportunities for long-term success. Having a well-designed learning environment is essential, as it boosts focus and engagement while also fostering teamwork and collaboration, helping students build the interpersonal skills they’ll need for the future.

To address these needs, HXP Builders will construct new classrooms for a school in San José. These classrooms will teach students important life skills. By creating a safe, supportive environment, this initiative promotes education. Through this project, there will be more opportunities to advance educational equity, ensuring that all children can thrive and participate fully in their communities.
