2026 Project Story: Italy Love

October 28, 2025

Italy has long served as a primary entry point for migrants and refugees seeking safety and opportunity in Europe. As of mid-2025, over 33,000 individuals arrived by sea, fleeing violence, persecution, and instability in countries such as Sudan, Syria, and Libya. This ongoing influx continues to place substantial pressure on Italy’s reception system, particularly in southern and coastal regions. Reception centers are overwhelmed, with limited capacity, staff, and resources resulting in overcrowding and delays in essential services. Despite government and international efforts, the refugee support infrastructure remains under-resourced, leaving many newcomers in precarious conditions. By early 2025, approximately 136,000 people were hosted across various reception facilities in Italy, with unaccompanied minors making up about 12% of arrivals, further complicating humanitarian responses¹².

At a more individual level, refugees and displaced individuals, especially those living in transitional housing or reception centers, confront daily uncertainty and vulnerability. Language barriers, bureaucratic obstacles, and high unemployment restrict their access to stable work and housing. Many depend on temporary shelters where overcrowding and substandard conditions pose health and safety risks. Local NGOs and UNHCR emphasize that addressing these challenges requires community-centered programs focused on social inclusion, language learning, job training, and mental wellbeing³.

In this context of widespread vulnerability and need for social support, HXP Builders will partner with a center serving adults with disabilities—another often marginalized group facing isolation and limited recreational opportunities. By helping to build a welcoming outdoor recreational space and actively engaging with residents through food preparation, games, and music, the Builders address critical elements of social integration and mental health. Their efforts contribute to creating dignified, supportive environments that foster community connection and wellbeing, aligning with broader humanitarian goals to empower vulnerable populations. Through this collaboration, HXP Builders not only respond to immediate physical needs but also promote long-term inclusion and resilience among displaced and disabled individuals alike.
