2026 Project Story: Thailand Central

Rural Thailand faces persistent economic challenges despite the country’s growth. About 4.89% of the population, or roughly 3.43 million people, were classified as poor in 2024, with farmers making up nearly half of this group¹. Their incomes are unstable due to reliance on weather-dependent crops and fluctuating market prices. Poverty is more prevalent in rural areas where infrastructure and market access are limited, and education disparities worsen inequality. For example, uneducated individuals are over four times more likely to be living in poverty than those with secondary education¹.

Thailand’s One Tambon One Product (OTOP) program is crucial for rural economic empowerment. Launched in 2001, OTOP encourages subdistricts to develop and market unique local products, preserving cultural heritage while generating income². Around 30,000 OTOP products cover food, textiles, and handicrafts, supporting small businesses and community engagement. Studies show OTOP markets help reduce poverty by creating jobs and increasing local commerce, although challenges remain in market access and product diversity³. The OTOP program has boosted average household income by approximately 2,865 Thai Baht annually, demonstrating its positive impact on poverty reduction and local economic development.

This summer, HXP Builders will construct an OTOP Market Center where locals can buy and sell crafts, boosting the rural town’s economy. By promoting unique local products, the center will support Thai businesses and preserve traditional skills. It will create jobs, increase community income, and stimulate commerce. The market will also foster community engagement and celebrate local culture, providing Builders a meaningful chance to connect with and serve the community while making a lasting impact.
