2026 Project Story: Uganda Pearl of Africa

Uganda has made steady progress in recent years, but many families still face tough living conditions. About 21% of the population lives below the national poverty line¹, with rural communities carrying most of the burden. Many households struggle to find enough food, safe housing, and reliable healthcare². Childhood malnutrition remains a serious issue—nearly one in three children under the age of five experience stunted growth³. These challenges, combined with economic pressures, population growth, and uneven infrastructure, place even more strain on schools and community resources across the country⁴.


Across Uganda, many schools struggle with overcrowded classrooms—especially at the primary level. In some communities, a single teacher may be responsible for more than 100 students, making it hard to give individual attention or maintain strong academic performance⁵. With limited classroom space, schools often hold multiple shifts or combine grade levels just to fit everyone in⁶. A shortage of learning materials and trained teachers makes the challenge even greater, and millions of children remain out of school altogether because of poverty, distance, or a lack of proper facilities⁷. Without more classrooms and better support, many students miss out on the foundational skills they need for future opportunities.


This summer, HXP Builders will construct two new classrooms at a high school in Uganda to relieve extreme overcrowding. The school currently serves approximately 939 students in only 6 classrooms, creating an overwhelming learning environment for both students and teachers. By adding two additional classrooms, the project will create more space for focused learning, reduce student-to-teacher ratios, and support healthier classroom dynamics. These improvements will help students stay engaged, build stronger skills, and access the education they need to shape their futures.
