2026 Project Story: Ecuador Galapagos North

October 28, 2025

Famous for the Galápagos Islands and its breathtaking diversity, Ecuador hides deep educational inequalities beneath its natural beauty. While 92% of children enroll in basic education, attendance plunges in rural areas, where only 62% attend school compared to over 100% in urban zones¹. Many rural schools operate with just one or two teachers, often without bilingual or intercultural resources². Dropout rates remain high due to poverty and outdated teaching methods². Though national reforms have improved access, unequal funding and weak infrastructure continue to divide urban and Indigenous communities, leaving Ecuador’s rural youth at the edge of opportunity³.

In Quito’s Metropolitan District, early childhood centers and public schools reveal how infrastructure shapes a child’s future. Across the city, overcrowding is severe, with 40 to 60 students per classroom, leaving little room for individual attention and inadequate space. About 20% of facilities lack adequate sanitation, learning materials, and age-appropriate spaces, hindering children’s concentration and emotional development⁴. Though national enrollment rates remain high, limited resources and teacher overload continue to strain the system. In Quito, the quality of the classroom itself has become one of the strongest predictors of educational success⁴.

This summer, HXP builders will partner with local organizations and community members in Ecuador to address educational needs by constructing two additional classrooms for an overcrowded school. This project will create more space for children currently on the waitlist to attend, effectively doubling the number of students who can access education and learn in a safe, supportive environment.
Final details on the number of classrooms and students who will benefit are still being confirmed in collaboration with the school.
