Costa Rica has made significant strides in improving its education system, but the country still faces pressing challenges. Although primary education is free and enrollment rates are high, only about 34% of students complete high school.¹ This gap reveals underlying inequalities, particularly in rural and economically disadvantaged areas. These regions often lack adequate educational infrastructure and resources, contributing to persistent disparities and limiting opportunities for many Costa Ricans. Without proper learning spaces, many students struggle to stay engaged, making it harder for them to reach their full academic potential.
Children in Costa Rica, especially those in San José, face substantial difficulties in their educational journeys.² Although an urban center, many schools in San José contend with overcrowded classrooms and aging infrastructure that challenge both students and educators. Economic hardships in some neighborhoods cause students to leave school early to support their families. A well-designed learning environment is critical here, not only improving focus and engagement but also fostering collaboration and interpersonal skills necessary for success in future professional settings.
This summer, HXP Builders will help address these challenges by constructing new classrooms for a school in San José. Classrooms will provide space for students, ensuring an environment that supports both academic growth and personal development. By expanding the school’s capacity, this project will allow more students to access education while also improving the overall learning experience. With optimized space and resources, students will benefit from a more structured and engaging atmosphere that fosters collaboration and inclusivity, ultimately empowering them to thrive both in school and beyond.
