2026 Project Story: Ecuador Preserve

October 28, 2025

In Ecuador, food insecurity is a growing challenge affecting families across the country. About 21.4% of Ecuadorians—roughly 3.8 million people—struggle to get enough nutritious food each day¹. The youngest are especially at risk: nearly 23% of children under five face chronic malnutrition², which can affect how they grow and learn. As living costs rise and resources become harder to access, experts predict that the number of people facing food crises or emergencies could increase from 14% to 15% between 2024 and 2025³, underscoring the urgency of this issue.

In in region of Ecuador Preserve, over 80% of low-income households face food insecurity, leaving women and children vulnerable to anemia and stunted growth. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and proteins line market stalls, but their prices soar far beyond reach. By 2023, a healthy diet cost 41% of a basic monthly salary—nearly three times more than a typical meal. For countless households, proper nutrition has become a luxury they simply cannot afford.

This summer, HXP will partner with local residents in Quito, Ecuador, to make a lasting impact in the mountain communities. Together, they’ll support 25–30 families by building chicken coops, providing a sustainable source of food through eggs and chicken meat. These families will also be able to sell their products in city markets, strengthening both household income and the local economy. As a secondary project, builders will work alongside the same families to plant and harvest fruits and vegetables while learning about the region’s agricultural practices. HXP builders’ efforts will directly help families combat food insecurity and ensure they have the nourishment they need to thrive.
