2026 Project Story: Philippines Luzon South

October 28, 2025

The Philippines continues to face a wide range of health challenges, including malnutrition, maternal care, and adolescent health. Uneven access to primary healthcare and nutritious food leaves many families vulnerable to preventable illness. More than one in five young children in 2025 experience stunted growth, 5% are wasted, and 20% of older children are overweight¹. These numbers show how both undernutrition and rising obesity affect children across the country. When combined with high maternal and neonatal mortality rates and the second-highest adolescent pregnancy rate among the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), these patterns reveal how deeply poverty and poor health outcomes are connected.

In the Laguna Province, early adolescent pregnancy, inconsistent access to nutritious food, and gaps in health services create significant challenges for children and families. Children may arrive at community programs undernourished or with micronutrient deficiencies, and local health initiatives have limited capacity to reach all children consistently². Families may struggle to provide balanced diets due to economic constraints, and overcrowded communities can exacerbate the spread of illness. These conditions make accessible nutrition and health centers essential for supporting children’s growth and overall well-being.

This summer, HXP Builders will work alongside community members in the Laguna Province to construct a multipurpose building at a local elementary school serving approximately 469 students. Many families in the area face economic hardship, and some children arrive at school without lunches, contributing to ongoing concerns around malnutrition. While the Department of Education funds feeding programs to help address these needs, the school currently lacks an adequate space to support them. This new facility will include a washing station to promote proper hygiene and a flexible gathering space that can be used for daily feeding programs, school assemblies, and community events. The Department of Education has identified this region as one of the areas of greatest need and formally requested support for the project. By creating a safe, functional space where students can receive nourishment, practice healthy habits, and gather as a community, this project will help strengthen the well-being and future opportunities of children and families across Laguna Province.
