2027 Project Story: Dominican Republic Pura Isla South

November 2026

In the Dominican Republic, over 31% of children live in monetary poverty, highlighting an ongoing national challenge in securing consistent resources for young families ¹. While overall access to primary education has improved, public schools across the country face a deep mismatch between available classroom infrastructure and the skills required to support a growing youth population ². Low-income families rely heavily on local municipal schools to provide safe, comprehensive facilities where children can receive both an education and essential daily nutrition.

In the municipality of Tamboril, rapid urban growth and local economic pressures place heavy strain on public facilities. Lower-income neighborhoods face distinct infrastructure deficits, leaving schools overcrowded and under-resourced. At one particular school classroom space is severely constrained. Although a single classroom donated by the government last year allowed 22 pre-kinder and kindergarten children to be accommodated, the school still has many children on a waiting list. Overcrowding also affects the quality of education for existing students.

This summer, HXP Builders will construct a brand-new, two-classroom school block extension directly on the campus grounds. These two additional classrooms will immediately unlock physical capacity for up to 50 new students, allowing waitlisted children to enroll and ensuring local families no longer have to pay heavy daily transportation costs to send their kids to distant schools. By expanding the school's footprint, this build eliminates classroom overcrowding, creates a safer and more structured learning environment, and provides every grade level with a dedicated, quiet space where students can focus and succeed for years to come.
