Across the Pacific, inclusive education and practical career training are major game-changers for building real independence and creating real opportunities for young people ¹. In Fiji, national data shows that young adults with physical or intellectual disabilities face huge hurdles when trying to move from high school into the workforce ². According to UNESCO and the Fijian Ministry of Education, having accessible classrooms, hands-on skill workshops, and tailored mentorship makes all the difference in helping neurodivergent youth and students with special needs gain real-world job skills and financial independence ³ ⁴.
In Suva, one dedicated school serves students with diverse learning needs ranging from five-year-olds to young adults up to age 30. After an accidental electrical fire destroyed their original campus, the school had to move into a temporary rented building, squeezing nine standard rooms into 14 cramped cubicle spaces just to keep its primary classes and vocational programs running. This tight space puts young primary kids and adult vocational trainees right on top of each other every day. Right now, nearly 100 eligible local youth with special needs are stuck on a waiting list because there simply isn't enough room, leaving them without the specialized support and adaptive tools they need to shine.
This summer, HXP Builders will construct three dedicated vocational classrooms designed specifically for older students with special needs. This purpose-built space allows the school to separate its primary elementary classes from adult job training, opening up vital space across both programs to welcome up to 100 new students off the waiting list. In these bright, accessible rooms, students aged 15 to 30 will get hands-on career training—from mastering hospitality and catering skills to crafting commercial goods, managing product pricing, and connecting with local resort owners—giving them the skills, confidence, and real-world tools to launch independent, self-sustaining futures.
