2027 Project Story: Malawi: Refuge

November 2026

Only 19% of children ages 7–14 in Malawi demonstrate foundational reading skills, while just 13% demonstrate foundational numeracy skills, highlighting the importance of continued access to quality education.¹ Although more children are entering primary school, access to a supportive learning environment remains a challenge. In 2024, 66% of Malawi's primary schools had more than 90 students per permanent classroom in lower primary grades.¹ Expanding access to classrooms and supporting students as they progress through school are important steps toward strengthening educational opportunities for the next generation.

In a refugee camp, the need for continued educational opportunities is especially important. Originally established to accommodate approximately 12,000 people, the camp now hosts more than 52,000 refugees and asylum-seekers, placing significant pressure on community resources and essential services.² Despite these challenges, refugee families, local residents, and supporting organizations have worked together to establish schools and create opportunities for children to learn. One community-supported primary school currently provides education through Grade 6. As its first graduating class prepares to move forward, the community is working to ensure these students have a place to continue their education rather than having their learning journey end after primary school.³

In summer 2027, HXP Builders will help construct a new classroom block at the community-supported school in Dzaleka, creating space for students to continue their education in Grade 7. This project will build on the educational foundation already established by refugee families, local residents, and supporting organizations. The new classrooms will provide a dedicated learning environment for the next group of students, helping the school extend its reach and create a pathway for continued learning. Builders will contribute to a lasting community resource that supports students as they develop their knowledge, discover new opportunities, and work toward their futures.
