2027 Project Story: Tonga Fua'amotu

November 2026

Across the Kingdom of Tonga, securing safe, permanent shelter is a major key for family stability and giving young people a solid base to build their futures ¹. National census data from the World Bank and UNICEF shows that over 22% of Tongan households face multidimensional poverty, with rural and outer-island families dealing with some of the tougher living conditions in the region ² ³. While major relief programs step in after tropical cyclones hit, families dealing with daily severe overcrowding or fragile living conditions often get left out of traditional disaster aid, leaving them without official support to upgrade their homes ⁴.

In local Tongan communities, a strong culture of hospitality means families regularly open their doors to take in extended relatives and kids who need a safe place to stay. HXP has teamed up with local town halls and church leaders to back families living through especially tough circumstances. In one household, over a dozen family members are squeezed into a small space, forcing them to use literally every single room as a crowded bedroom. Another incredibly generous family has taken in several vulnerable children to make sure they're cared for, but they're all living together in fragile, temporary shelters. Without official housing aid, building a safe, solid home on their own is an enormous challenge.

To give these resilient families a real turning point, HXP Builders is teaming up with local Tongan tradespeople and community leaders to construct brand-new, permanent family homes from the ground up. Moving into a sturdy, spacious house instantly eliminates crazy overcrowding, creates a healthier daily routine, and gives kids a safe space to sleep and study. By locking in a safe home base, these families can finally stop stressing about basic shelter and start focusing on school, jobs, and building brighter futures.
