2027 Project Story: Tonga Tapu

November 2026

Across the South Pacific, having a safe, storm-ready home is a huge deal for protecting vulnerable families and building real community resilience ¹. In Tonga, data from the Asian Development Bank and the Tonga Department of Statistics shows that nearly a quarter of the population lives below the national hardship line, making home construction costs way out of reach for many families ² ³. While government aid programs step in after major tropical cyclones hit, families dealing with personal crises like house fires or those who desperately need wheelchair-accessible housing often get left out of formal relief efforts ⁴.

Teaming up with local town halls and church leaders, HXP connected with specific families facing major housing emergencies that fall through the cracks of traditional aid. After a devastating house fire completely wiped out their home, one local family lost everything and has been forced to live in temporary tents. Another family is caring for a loved one with mobility challenges, but their current space lacks barrier-free layouts, making daily movement and independence nearly impossible. Without outside backing, these families are stuck in unsafe conditions that put their health, safety, and daily comfort on hold.

HXP Builders will construct brand-new, resilient homes to help each family's exact needs—including fully accessible, barrier-free layouts. This build gets fire-affected families out of temporary tents and into a permanent structure while giving individuals with physical disabilities an empowering, safe space to navigate every day. Locking in secure housing restores safety, dignity, and a solid foundation for these families to move forward with confidence.
